SUMMARY:COPA Critical Decision Making Seminar at FFZ
LOCATION:KFFZ-Falcon Field Mesa, AZ
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association (COPA)\nCritical Decision Making Semin
ar\n\nMay 16th at 9:30am-3pm\nKFFZ-Falcon Field Mesa, AZ\n\n\n\n
\n\n\nDo you know how risky your last flight was Or how risky the one you a
re about to take is Do you think anyone who ended up in an NTSB report didn
t expect to arrive Do we necessarily have to live with increased risk becau
se we fly\n\n\nA Critical Decision Making (CDM) seminar isnt really a semin
ar but rather a facilitated interactive hangar flying session where the gro
up looks at general aviation and Cirrus statistics, reviews case studies of
Cirrus accidents, and participates in the reenactment of an actual acciden
t. All pilots and operators are welcome to attend. The CDM is free, but don
ations to cover costs are certainly welcomed.\n\n\n------------------------
-------------------------------\n\n\nCDM seminars take an intensive look at
general aviation safety, analysis of past accidents - including some Cirru
s accidents - and create a formal method of conducting individualized safet
y routines for each of our pilots. This is a highly interactive seminar wit
h lots of thought provoking discussion and analysis. We want to encourage b
road Cirrus pilot (and partner) participation. Non COPA members are invited
. If you know some Cirrus pilots who don't participate here and/or are not
members, please invite them!\n\n\nDo you know how risky your last flight wa
s? Or how risky the one you are about to take is? Do you think anyone who e
nded up in an NTSB report didn't expect to arrive? Do we necessarily have t
o live with increased risk because we fly?\n\n\nWe fly an incredible plane
with fantastic safety features on board, yet our statistics to date, aren't
any better than that of general aviation. We know from commercial airline
statistics that it isn't the act of flying nor the capabilities of aircraft
that cause accidents. IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE OUR FLYING AS SAFE AS COMMERC
IAL AIR TRAVEL? We believe that answer is YES.\n\n\nA Critical Decision Mak
ing (CDM) seminar isn't really a seminar but rather a facilitated interacti
ve hangar flying session where the group looks at general aviation and Cirr
us statistics, reviews case studies of Cirrus accidents, and participates i
n the reenactment of an actual accident.\n\n\nAlthough we discuss and set m
inimums, our decisions aren't usually black and white, but often quite gray
. Combined with a lack of appreciation for risk and the confluence of other
wise benign risk factors (no one thing in the flight meets the NOGO criteri
a), our human nature minimizes risk or leaps to wishful expectation that ev
erything will be alright. The seminar concludes with the group understandin
g and quantifying the various factors that add risk to a flight and how to
minimize or eliminate the risk.\n\n\nThis isn't just for low time pilots. H
igher time pilots often add useful experience to the discussion. And, altho
ugh lower time pilots often lack the experience that aids judgment, higher
time pilots often use experience to justify risky behavior. Almost half the
accidents in Cirrus, to date, have been by higher time pilots.\n\n\nThe se
minar is free (though donations are accepted).\n\n\nCirrus Owners and Pilot
s Association (COPA)\n
