General Aviation Joint Steering Committee
Short Field Operations
Outreach Guidance & Notes Document
2022/03-17-252(I)PP
This outreach guidance is provided to all FAA and aviation industry groups that are participating in outreach efforts sponsored by the General Aviation Joint Safety Committee (GAJSC). It is important that all outreach on a given topic is coordinated and is free of conflicts. Therefore, all outreach products should be in alignment with the outline and concepts listed below for this topic.
Outreach Month: July 2024
Topic: Short Field Operations
The FAA and industry will conduct a public education campaign emphasizing best practices for short field operations
Background:
Mismanagement of short field operations is cited in NTSB accident reports that involve pilots with and without short field experience. This program suggests that training and practice in short field operations will not only improve short field performance but also normal flight operations. Because inaccurate or incomplete performance calculations and improper short field technique are cited as causal factors, the GAJSC feel that additional training in short field operations may reduce loss of control and controlled flight into terrain accidents.
Teaching Points:
- Discuss the necessity of planning and practice in short field operations.
- Training and practice with a CFI is the best way to prepare for short field operations.
- Predicting aircraft and pilot performance is essential to short field operations safety..
Note: This outreach consists of this guidance and presentation notes document and a Power Point show.
