Stephen Corcoran, Ryan Field Air Traffic Control Tower, Manager
J. Fernando Morales III, FAA Runway Safety Program Manager,
AWP Runway Safety Group:
Runway incursions remain a serious concern nationally. One important component of our ongoing effort to improve surface safety at RYN Airport involves conducting a Runway safety Action Team (RSAT) meeting at least once each year.
The purpose of this RSAT meeting is to unite those individuals and organizations that are actively involved in air traffic operations and movement of aircraft, vehicles and equipment on the Airport Operations Area (AOA). We look for participation from all major airport interests including tenants, fixed base operators, airport operations, maintenance personnel and airport users.
Participants are asked to help develop recommendations and solutions to enhance surface safety. Those recommendations serve as the foundation for a site-specific Runway Safety Action Plan.
Note: Prior to attending a safety seminar please review and abide by current CDC, State and Local health guidelines.
This is a "hybrid" meeting providing an opportunity to attend via Zoom or in person.

Runway incursions are a major factor in aviation safety. While many things have been done to reduce the accident rate in General Aviation and the Air Carrier Industry, both sides of the aviation house are still experiencing far too many runway incursions. This could be the result of "Read back - Hear back" issues, poor airport signage, pilot inattention/knowledge, expectation bias, or a combination of factors. Runway safety is a major concern for all pilots and if you have been around aviation for a long period of time you have probably seen some close calls on the runways and taxiways, or even been involved in some yourself.

"From the Flight Deck" video series provides pilots with actual runway approach and airport taxiway footage captured with cockpit mounted cameras, combined with diagrams and visual graphics to clearly identify hot spots and other safety-sensitive items.
"Runway Safety Pilot Simulator" video series a self-guided resource to assist flight instructors with teaching student pilots surface safety best practices, before they step foot into the cockpit.
