This three-hour safety seminar will begin with a one-hour seminar on ATIS/AWOS, covering how it works—and how it sometimes doesn’t. We’ll explore system limitations, common errors, and best practices for pilots relying on automated weather information.
Following the seminar, the two-hour Pilot/Controller Forum will bring together representatives from local flight schools, the KFLG Air Traffic Control Tower, Phoenix Approach, and the FAA Safety Team. This forum provides a platform to discuss safety concerns, address common mistakes, and improve communication between pilots and controllers.
Pilots of all experience levels are encouraged to attend. Bring your questions for an open Q&A session with tower representatives!
This event is in person with limited seating—please register in advance!
**Runway Safety & Pilot Controller Forum at Flagstaff Airport**
The program will start off with a 1-hour presentation on ATIS/ASOS,- “how it works - or doesn’t work,” by Fred Gibbs, (FAAST Team Lead Representative for N. AZ)
Join us for a three hour interactive discussion tailored for all users of the Northern Arizona airspace surrounding Flagstaff Airport. Have you ever wondered what controllers really mean when they say “Hold Short” or “Stand By”? Curious about the best practices for navigating the Phoenix VFR corridors or obtaining instrument approaches efficiently? Want to clarify what to do when you're cleared to land but there’s still an aircraft on the runway? Why can’t we “Line up and wait” like other airports? What does 5000 and 5 actually mean on the ATIS?
This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with Air Traffic Manager JD Scurnopoli from Flagstaff Tower, Samir Kanuga (FAAST Team Lead Representative specializing in runway safety), and Matt Schorman from Phoenix Approach Control to gain valuable insights into air traffic operations and runway safety.
This forum is your chance to ask these questions and more. Designed to foster better communication and understanding between pilots and air traffic controllers, this session aims to enhance safety, reduce common errors, and ensure smooth operations in the N. Arizona airspace, and specifically, the Flagstaff airspace.
**Pilots of all experience levels are welcome.** Don’t miss this opportunity to improve your skills, clarify procedures, and connect with your local air traffic team.
